Canvas of memories

(my mama-sewn childhood)

Your smile's on my mouth, it shines in my eyes,

before the needle, gold threads run apart.
Colourful buttons, an army of joy,
roll everywhere all around on the floor.
Into the corner (the place of a sprite),
afternoon sun puts a bouquet of light.
On the black back of the humming cookstove,
memories slumber and tenderly glow.
They melt silently, the old kitchen fades,
time dances his dance, the fabric decays.
Small cotton fluffs float, fly down on my hand,
I mend the canvas as long as I can.

Emlékek szövete

(Mama varrta gyerekkorom)

Mosolyod a számon, szememben a fény,
Aranyszálak futnak szét a tű hegyén.
Gurulnak a gombok, tarka hadsereg,
Duruzsoló sparhelt hátán szendereg,
Olvad a sok emlék, megfakul a kép;
Lebomlik a szövet, kis pamutpihék
Némán lebegnek, tenyeremre szállnak...
Ameddig tudom, foltozom a vásznat.

Cousins

Once upon a time,
Two little, little girls,
One blonde and one blonder,
Enjoyed the sweet summers.

They splashed in the lake,
Then lay and watched the sky,
Named all the fleecy clouds,
Stared at a butterfly.

They played hide and seek
Around the dreamy house,
Sang together with wrens,
And giggled with the doves.

When they took a walk,
In their same blue dresses,
Everybody smiled, ‘cause
They endlessly chatted.

They picked wild flowers
On droning green meadows,
And then they slept among
Sunshine scented pillows.

Many summers bathed
In the waves of that lake…
Times have changed so much,
Just memories remained.

The two girls grew up,
The blonde, and the brunette.
One went to the right and
the other to the left.

Egykor

Két pöttömnyi lányka,
Egy szőke és egy szőkébb,
Életük nyaranta,
Egykor még, összeszőtték.

Egy kádban pancsoltak
A rózsalugas mellett,
S mindketten nyafogtak,
Ha ebédelni kellett.

Bújócskát játszottak
Az erdőszéli házban,
Majd együtt aludtak
Nagy dunyhák közt az ágyban.

Egyforma ruhában,
Ha kirándulni mentek,
Be nem állt a szájuk,
Vég nélkül csicseregtek.

Nem mindig értették,
Miről beszél a másik,
De ez gyerekkorban
Még nem is igen számít.

Balaton vizében
Sok nyár fürdött azóta,
Más ma már a világ,
De ugyanaz a móka.

Felnőtt a két lány is,
A szőke és a barna,
Erre jár az egyik,
A másikuk meg arra.

Growing up

I've been waiting
- for almost thirty years -
that I will finally grow up.
But I feel like

I’m still just pretending:
drinking wine, a little,
while preparing dinner,
and there is the coffee
in the morning…
It smells like the old kitchen...

The small Sokol was speaking
on the top of the fridge
- it had a worn-out
brown leather case -
with a wire attached
to the light switch
- Daddy tinkered it...
The lunch was
already wrapped up.
Aftershave scented…
Sometimes a bit
also its taste…
At a quarter past seven,
we went to school.
My little sister and I.

It was so simple.
A familiar,
one-way street,
solicitous eyes followed,
took care of us...
Then I noticed
I was going alone.
And I felt proud,
as when I was five
and realized that
no one held my bike.

And there came
partings of the ways,
series of involved
roundabouts.
Potholes, dead ends ...
Hooted sweeping past years ...
I thought I would grow up
by the time I get here ...
Coffee fragranced kitchen. And I...
Sometimes, I play an adult.
Like back in the days.

Felnövök egyszer

Várom – már, vagy
harminc éve –, hogy
egyszer végre
felnövök,
de mintha még most is
csak megjátszanám:
ha főzök, bort iszom,
és reggelente ott a kávé...
Illata, mint a régi konyháé...

Szólt a kis Sokol a hűtő tetején

– ütött-kopott barna bőrtokja volt –
egy dróttal a villanykapcsolóba
kötve – apu bütykölte...
A tízórai már becsomagolva várt.
Arcszesz illatú ... egy kicsit
néha az íze is... Negyed nyolckor
suliba mentünk. A húgom meg én.

Olyan egyszerű volt.

Ismerős, egyirányú utca,
féltőn kísérő tekintetek...
Majd észrevettem,
hogy már egyedül megyek,
és büszke voltam,
mint ötévesen, amikor
rájöttem, hogy a biciklit
nem fogja senki sem.

És jöttek az útelágazások,

kusza körforgalmak sora.
Kátyúk, zsákutcák...
Tülkölve elszáguldó évek...
Azt hittem, felnövök,
mire ide érek...
Kávéillatú a konyha. És én
– néha – felnőttet játszom.
Mint annak idején.

Old times

When the days still went on foot,
stopped to stare the glowing dawn,
stood aside to take a rest,
bent for an amazing stone.

When the love was simply love,
You and I until the death,
when the time was not a load,
when that stone could be a pledge.

St. Martin’s day goose reminded me of this old photo
of my gramdmother (in the darker dress) and her sister.

Régi idők

Amikor a napok még gyalog jártak,
és megcsodálták a hajnali eget,
az árokparton pihentek egy kicsit,
felvettek a porból egy fénylő követ.

A rohanó idő még nem volt teher,
kincset ért az úton talált szép kavics,
együtt, kéz a kézben, át az éveken,
ilyen egyszerű volt a szerelem is.

The photos were made sometime in the forties.

mamamamamama

mama, I am thirsty
mama, I need to pee
mama, now tell a tale
mama, please, answer me

mama, let's bake a cake
mama, can I help you
oh, this egg's broken, I
bring a new one for you

mama, listen to me
I am handy, am I
look, I paint here, for you
a big Sun to the sky

mama, don't cook, don't sew
mama, just play with me
it's a secret magic
I'm a little fairy

mama, let's spin around
till we begin to fly
mama, please pick me up
because that is too high

mama, come, take my hand
mama, look here, where I'm
mama, I hide somewhere
mama, come, find me now

mama, I am so bored
I go with you, mama
mama, you'll see how good
how good I'll be, mama

mama, dark is the sky
I am so scared, mama
mama, hug me, hold tight
take me home, dear mama

mama, szomjas vagyok
mama, pisilni kell
mama, mesélj nekem
mama, kérlek felelj

mama, süssünk sütit

mama, segíthetek
mama, ez összetört
hozok újat neked

mama, figyelj most rám

ugye, ügyes vagyok
ide festek neked
nézd, egy vidám napot

mama, ne főzz, ne varrj

mama, játssz most velem
nézd, egy tündér vagyok
ez egy varázsköpeny

mama, forogj velem

mama, vegyél most fel
mama, segíts nekem
azt ott nem érem el

mama, fogd a kezem

mama, nézd, hol vagyok
mama, keress majd meg
mama, most elbújok

mama, unatkozom

mama, én is megyek
mama, meglátod majd
milyen jó is leszek

mama, sötét az ég

én úgy félek, mama
mama, ölelj most át
mama, vigyél haza

At the Zoo

When I was around five years old,
I was taken to the Zoo.
I was blond, and small, and shy,
nothing was I dared to do.

A group of older schoolboys stood
next to the cage of monkeys,
"You're ugly!" they mocked the chimps,
"You are ugly!" they chanted.

I threaded my way through them, and
bravely stopped before the bars,
"You're beautiful, beautiful!"
I started to shout aloud.

My grandmother and I

This story was told by my grandmother so many times, but I don't know what happened after that... I'd like to think the boys fell silent, ashamed, but more likely they didn't care about me so much... :D

Photos were taken at Budapest Zoo in 2004.

I recall you

For my grandfather

We wandered in the woods
Through summer afternoons.
The light was like
A fairy smile
As fell down from the leaves.
She washed her face
In silver waves
Then danced around the trees.
We walked along,
Followed her song
Until she slipped away.
Crossing the stream
We left our dream,
And you told me a tale.

You always said that you would bring down
All stars from the sky for me.
I clung to your neck that I kept you back,
Just stay, just stay with me.

You always said that you never leave,
You will be there if I need.
But you passed away, and I just couldn’t say
How much you mean for me.

We waited for the light
Through endless winter nights.
And it shone bright,
An angel eyes
Watching behind the door.
She flew so long
To hear your song,
To stay until they call.
She raised me high,
Over the sky
Before she slipped away.
Then I fell down
Into your arm,
And you told me a tale.

You always said that you would bring down
All stars from the sky for me.
I clung to your neck that I kept you back,
Just stay, just stay with me.

You always said that you never leave,
You will be there if I need.
But you passed away, now I just want to say
I wish you back to me.
