Thornton Wilder: The Bridge of San Luis Rey

"Either we live by accident and die by accident, or we live by plan and die by plan."

"She opened the door upon her balcony and looked at the great tiers of stars that glittered above the Andes. Throughout the hours of the night, though there had been few to hear it, the whole sky had been loud with the singing of these constellations."

"Even speech was for them a debased form of silence; how much more futile is poetry which is a debased form of speech."

"He was the awkwardest speaker in the world apart from the lore of the sea, but there are times when it requires a high courage to speak the banal."

"Like all solitary persons he had invested friendship with a divine glamour..."

"Like all beautiful women who have been brought up amid continual tributes to their beauty she assumed without cynicism that it must necessarily be basis of anyone's attachment to herself"

"...but do you know, my daughter, than in love - I scarcely dare say it - but in love our very mistakes don't seem to be able to last long?"

"Even memory is not necessary for love."

Aztán mennyivel gyatrább a költészet, mely a beszéd egyik silányabb formája."

I must find more information about this author. I don't know what he means with constellations singing, but I can say that gazing at the stars in a cold winter night, one believes to hear music. :)
